The Effects of Facilitative Communication Skill training using Role play on Prejudice and Intention of Interaction with the Mentally-disabled among Nursing Students
Kang Myung-Ock

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the effects of facilitative communication training using role play on prejudice toward the mentally-disabled and intention of interaction with the mentally-disabled among nursing students.

Method: Quasi-nonequivalent experimental design was adopted. The subject were 68 nursing students(experiment: 32case, control: 36case) from Chodang university in Chonnam Province. The education using slide lecture about schizophrenia and affective disorder was given to both groups. And then, facilitative communication training to experiment group. Data was collected before and after the experiment by using self-rating questionnaire consisted of 90 items. The data analysis was done using x2-test, paired-t rest, t-test, ANCOVA.

Results£ºAfter experiment, after ANCOVA, the experiment group showed significantly higher intention of interaction(t=2.371, p=.021, F=6.166, p=.016) and facilitative communication(t=4.619, p=.000; F=15.894, p=.000) than those of control group. but no significant difference in prejudice(F=3.967, p=.051), recoverbility(F=3.647, p=.061) and perils(F=.908, p=.344). A important thing were that the changes on perils(paired t=-3.311, p=.001) in control group and intention of interaction(paired t=-3.625, p=.001) in experiment group after experiment were getting worse than before experiment.

Conclusion: Facilitative communication training using role play was considered to be effective but not enough to improve prejudice toward the mentally-disabled and intention of interaction with the mentally-disabled. Further studies using Facilitative communication training using role play, more lecture sessions and other educational strategies will be needed.
